Storm

One of my favorite characters from Marvel's X-Men. I was inspired by old movie posters, so I made this rendition of Storm in her 2021 Hellfire Gala look.

Process

I started with lightly penciling a sketch in my sketchbook using old movie posters, both old ones from the 20th century and new ones that were scrapped like those of some of the MCU Spider-Man series.

Then I hardened the sketch with color pencil. Because coloring will eventually be digitized, the specific color of the color pencil didn't matter to me.

After taking a photo of the sketch and putting it into my computer, using Photoshop, I did some adjustments to Storm's profile to make her profile more accurate to a black woman's. This was a mistake I only noticed after hardening the sketch.

I then turned the sketch into an overlay layer. I wanted the piece to have some texture along with being fairly lineless, so I used a textured brush to color block in the lines and shapes and adding in some light shading around her neck and chin. I didn't do limited color schemes too often, so I remeember that was why I focused on using mainly primary colors.

Some gradient was added to the background and lightning bolt.

Some extra lines were added on her skin. More lighter colors were added to her lips, and yellow and yellow gradients were added to the underside of Storm's neck. I also added a bit more definition to her cheek bones.

Lastly I removed the sketch overlay.
